CTED participates in Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism Latin America technology workshop

On 16 April 2024, the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate participated in the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism's Latin America technology workshop in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

On 16 April 2024, the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) participated in a regional technology workshop for Latin America in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Organized by the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) and the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FIRJAN), the workshop was aimed at local and international technology companies based in the region that were interested in learning more about how terrorist and violent extremist networks exploit digital platforms in Latin America and the ways technology companies are working together to build solutions. This was the first workshop that GIFCT organized in the region.

CTED highlighted that even though terrorism perception is low in the region, it could increase the region*s vulnerabilities to terrorism recruiting and financing, as States and other stakeholders might not prioritize terrorism prevention actions as much. CTED discussed the region*s vulnerabilities, including the prevalence of violence and organized crime groups, porous borders and the rising threats posed by terrorism on the basis of xenophobia, racism and other forms of intolerance, which are amplified on social media platforms.

CTED also presented on the work of the Committee and CTED to counter the misuse of information and communications technologies and emerging technologies for terrorist purposes, in particular the Delhi Declaration and the development of the non-binding guiding principles.
