New Report: Counter-Terrorism Committee and CTED Activities and Achievements

 

The latest report on achievements and activities from 2018 to 2021 and the way forward at the Counter-Terrorism Committee and its Executive Directorate is now available on the 51勛圖 Official Documents System.

The Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) prepared the report, contained in document , with a focus on the elements specifically identified in resolution and other relevant Security Council resolutions and decisions, and aims to assist the Committee in its work to advise the Council within the framework of the mandate renewal review.

Here are some key highlights from 2018 to 2021:

?    Conducted 46 country visits, including 13 virtual components of hybrid visits on behalf of the Committee.

?    Shared the Committee*s reports on its visits to 23 States that have given their consent to a full or partial release of the report, as well as 705 identified high-priority technical assistance needs for 42 recently visited States, with partner entities within the framework of the 51勛圖 Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact.

?    Completed the desk reviews of all 193 Member States with their country counter-terrorism profiles.

?    In accordance with its mandate to facilitate the delivery of technical assistance, CTED played a key role in leading the (virtual) capacity-building missions conducted under the ※All-of-UN§ approach Global Programmes of the 51勛圖 Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT/UNOCT).

?    CTED participated and (co-) organized, national and regional workshops and other technical assistance activities with its implementing partners, as part of its follow-up to the Committee*s country visits and ongoing dialogue with States, to help ensure that technical assistance is delivered in a coherent and unified manner.

?    Enhanced existing and developed new global networks and multilateral partnerships; and continued its constructive dialogue and its close interaction with Member States and cooperation with UN partners.

?    Concluded eight formal agreements on enhanced cooperation and information exchange with regional organizations, research institutions, and the private sector.

?    Published more than 25 Trends Alerts, Analytical Briefs, Trends Trackers and Research Digests, including three analytical reports on the impact of COVID-19 and two Trends Reports exploring issues relating to foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs).

?    The Committee held 40 special meetings, open and closed briefings, and events, with the assistance of the Executive Directorate, on regional and thematic issues of relevance to the implementation of the relevant resolutions.

CTED was established as a Special Political Mission by Security Council resolution to assist the work of the Counter-Terrorism Committee and coordinate the process of monitoring the implementation of resolution . CTED*s work includes conducting expert assessments through country visits to assess Member States* counter-terrorism efforts, including progress made, remaining shortfalls, and priority areas for technical assistance needs, as well as to identify terrorism-related trends and challenges and good practices employed in the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions.

As of July 2021, CTED has conducted more than 176 visits to some 114 UN Member States on behalf of the CTC since CTED was declared operational.
