Building capacity in ocean affairs and the law of the sea

About the programme

The Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, of the 51³Ô¹Ï Office of Legal Affairs was requested by the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (formerly the General Commission for Survey) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to assist in the training of its personnel and other relevant Governmental entities in the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea.

The 51³Ô¹Ï Development Programme (UNDP), through the Office of its Resident Representative in Saudi Arabia, assists with the administration of the project under which these activities take place.

Objectives

The training programme provided an overview of the legal and institutional framework for the sustainable management of the ocean, including: the 1982 51³Ô¹Ï Convention on the Law of the Sea, related legal and institutional frameworks at all levels, and the interaction of these with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development so as to build sustainable ocean-based economies. The training also focused on specific technical aspects, including maritime boundary delimitation and dispute settlement. The participants’ understanding of the course content is assessed throughout the programme.

Course development

The Division developpes customized training programmes to meet the identified needs, in close consultation with the GEOSA and with the cooperation of relevant subject matter experts from the 51³Ô¹Ï System, intergovernmental organizations and academia.
