UN Technology Bank calls for scaled up efforts to support Least Developed Countries - Science, Technology, and Innovation Forum at UN in New York
On 9th and 10th of May 2024, the UN Technology Bank joined the ninth annual Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology, and Innovation at 51³Ô¹Ï Headquarters in New York. This annual UN Forum serves as a platform for fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing to advance the SDGs globally.
Under the theme, "Science, technology and innovation for reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions", experts explored innovative solutions and strategies to address global challenges with a special emphasis on climate change, food security and poverty eradication.
They highlighted that science, technology, and innovation are indispensable for addressing the multifaceted challenges embedded in the SDGs, as STI provides the tools and solutions necessary for transformative progress. Much of the focus centered around the unique challenges faced by Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in adopting and leveraging digital technologies. The forum highlighted the need for increased investment in digital infrastructure, capacity building, and policy support to bridge the digital divide and foster innovation in these most vulnerable and poor countries.
During the STI Forum, the UN Technology Bank, alongside Finland, Nepal and UN-OHRLLS, co-hosted the side event “Unpacking the potential of STI for enhancing agricultural productivity in LDCs and LLDCs “. The event featured prominent speakers showcasing strong commitment and providing excellent insights on how innovation can help develop sustainable agrifood systems in some of the world’s most vulnerable countries.
Deodat Maharaj, Managing Director of the UN Technology Bank emphasized the need for tailored technological solutions, advocating against a "one size fits all" approach, underlining how we all play a key role in leveraging knowledge to provide low cost and high impact solutions. He highlighted the UN Technology Bank’s ongoing efforts in conducting Technology Needs Assessments to inform and facilitate targeted technology transfer initiatives, driven by demand from LDCs in key areas for sustainable development.
Gratitude is extended to the Permanent Mission of Finland, Permanent Mission of Nepal, and UN-OHRLLS for their collaboration in organizing the side event. Their support facilitated a forward-looking engagement on how technology can be used to deliver results for LDCs and help them fast-track the achievement of their development goals.
